Nikolaus Marschik was born on 6 August 1971 in Linz. After studying and obtaining a doctorate in law in Vienna, he worked for the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Human Rights and the International Centre for Migration Policy Development in Vienna.
In 2000, he joined the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs. After working in the Office of the Legal Adviser as well as at the Permanent Mission of Austria to the United Nations in Geneva and in the Office of the Secretary General, he was Head of Cabinet at the Foreign Ministry from 2005 to 2009 and again in 2014.
From 2009 to 2014, Nikolaus Marschik was Director General for "Administrative Affairs" (now "Management"). From 2015 to 2017, he was Ambassador to Germany, subsequently he was appointed Head of Mission of the Permanent Representation of Austria to the European Union in Brussels.
