Supporting Scalable Food-system Business Cases Off-Grid

Productive Use of Energy (PUE) can have transformative impact in rural communities. Because of its transformative character for rural communities, it is receiving more and more attention in the SDG 7 community. However, there are still barriers that prevent this promising concept from reaching scale. Some of those barriers are limited supply of appropriate products, limited development of viable business cases and a lack of cross-disciplinary expertise and coordination.

SNV and other implementors in the EnDev Learning & Innovation Agenda have analysed innovative approaches, trends, and learnings connected to PUE approaches. Based on this analysis, it is clear that the scaling of productive use of energy requires a wider eco-system approach, i.e. a coordinated effort involving a wide variety of cross-sector stakeholders. Increased collaboration between stakeholders will serve to increase effectiveness and efficiency in PUE promotion, and specific support measures should aim to enable market growth, stimulate demand and increase supply.

This side event will present recent learnings and innovations on the use of energy in food-systems, moving towards scalable business cases.
