Skills Academy Workshop II: Y20-VEF

An increasing number of countries are pledging to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions over the coming decades. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, policy responses that seek to “build forward better” – more inclusively and sustainably – can accelerate the momentum for decarbonization of energy systems, and of economies at large. However, the level of commitments and actions towards net-zero is often still insufficient to meet the Paris goals and keep global temperature increase below 1.5 degrees Celsius.
More and more, young people worldwide are demanding that leaders step up ambition. Every effort to accelerate action towards Sustainable Development Goal 7 and the Paris goals must actively involve young people, and tap into their vision and leadership for the future. The workshop will provide Y20 delegates – and youth worldwide – with a platform to exchange inspiring perspectives and policy insights to boost an inclusive transition to net-zero energy, with youth as a driving force. The discussion will touch upon:
• A brief outlook into opportunities to decarbonize the energy sector by 2050 and boost a sustainable and inclusive recovery from the ongoing crisis.
• Policy priorities to ensure an inclusive energy transition and, in particular, equitable participation of young people in decision-making for the transition to net-zero energy.
