Background
Capacity Development (CD) and Capacity Building (CB) play a crucial role when sustainable energy supply will be implemented and investments into the technologies or into local companies are planned. The importance to enable key stakeholders along the value chain from the public, private and financial sector in fulfilling their roles is a precondition for a sound market development of Renewable Energy (RE) and Energy Efficiency (EE). But this relevance is oftentimes underestimated. Further on, missing donor coordination, unsystematic approaches or insufficient quality standards make it difficult for CD and CB activities to gain success.
Introduction
The workshop on “How to secure successful and sustainable Capacity Development” will improve the perception and knowledge about CD and CB, showcase successful methodologies and regional implementation and gives ideas for a good design and systematic approaches. It will highlight different aspects of capacity development, share experiences of experts from UNIDO, ECREEE, TERI, RENAC, NREL, REEEP and RCREEE and provide a platform where ideas and recommendations on good strategies and design of CD and CB can be exchanged.

Objectives
Objectives of the workshop are to:
Broaden the understanding on the importance and dimensions of Capacity Development for sustainable energy supply;
Highlight related aspects for successful CD: Capacity Needs Assessment, target group orientation, methodologies, quality assurance, impact assessment;
Share experiences of institutions active in the CD and CB sector on challenges and success stories and disseminate examples of good practice;
Identify key success factors for Capacity Development;
Develop ideas with the audience on how successful sustainable capacity building could look like;
Key Questions
Within the workshop experts on capacity development from ECREEE, EACREEE, NREL, TERI, RENAC, REEEP, UN-ESCWA and UNIDO will introduce different aspects of capacity development through short presentations.

Mr. Berthold Breid, Director, RENAC
Berthold Breid is the director and founder of Renewables Academy (RENAC), based in Berlin, and has long-standing experience in training, technology transfer and market development for renewable energy technologies, energy efficiency and climate protection. His Capacity Development career started in 1998 when Germany launched the first bigger PV-support program with trainings of 150 Berlin SMEs in solar thermal and photovoltaic applications. Since January 2008 Mr. Breid is managing RENAC, a company specialized on providing Capacity Building through trainings and Capacity Development worldwide to support the market development of renewable energies and energy efficiency.
Ms. Roula Majdalani Director, Sustainable Development Policies Division at UN-ESCWA
Roula Majdalani is the Director of the ESCWA Sustainable Development Policies Division at UN-ESCWA. The division promotes cooperation among ESCWA countries on the sustainable management of natural resources with a focus on water, energy and green production. Ms. Majdalani joined ESCWA in 1989 and has served as a Human Settlements Officer, First Economic Affairs Officer on water resources, and Chief of the Technical Cooperation Section. Ms. Majdalani holds a master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Syracuse University and previously worked with Dar Al-Handasah Consultants (London). She has publications on the green economy and integrated management of water resources, housing development and sustainable cities. She lectured on these topics in scientific, regional and international forums.
Mr. Byempaka Elsam Turyahabwe, Renewable Energy Expert, East African Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (EACREEE)
Mr. Turyahabwe Byempaka Elsam Renewable Energy Expert East African Community, with over 20 years of experience in renewable energy development in the region. Presently he is coordinating the establishment of the East African Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (EACREE). Mr. Turyahabwe has a Master of Science degree in Renewable Energy and environment from the University of Reading UK. He played a key role in the preparation of the renewable energy policy for Uganda 2007. He has prepared and implemented several development renewable energy and energy efficiency projects in Uganda. Mr. Turyahabwe has worked on two assignments for preparing the state of environment for Uganda contracted by the National Environment Authority Uganda.
Mr. Jansenio Delgado, Renewable Energy Expert, ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE)
Jansenio Delgado is a Renewable Energy Expert at the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), and ECREEE Capacity Building Officer. Before, he worked as manager of Electric, a private company that developed Cabo Verde’s first grid-connected wind energy project. He has over 26 years of experience in the energy sector, including high-level consulting, power system development, electric grid extensions as well as renewable energy development.
Mr. Ron Benioff, Director of Multilateral Programs at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Director of the Green Growth Best Practices Initiative (GGBP)
Ron Benioff is Director of Multilateral Programs at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. In this capacity, he serves as Director of the Clean Energy Solutions Center, a Clean Energy Ministerial initiative providing clean energy policy resources, expert advice, and training to countries around the world. He also manages NREL’s work as operating agent for the 21st Century Power Partnership, which advances clean energy grid integration and power sector transformation. In addition, he directs the LEDS Global Partnership where he coordinates activities of the partnership across the regional platforms, topical working groups, and more than 160 member institutions. Ron also manages NREL’s work to deliver energy services for the UNFCCC Climate Technology Center and Network. He recently served as Director of the Green Growth Best Practices Initiative, where he led the engagement of over 75 authors around the world in evaluation of effective practices with green growth analysis, planning, and implementation. Prior to joining NREL in 1997, he worked at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for 11 years on climate change and waste management issues.
Mr. Florian Bauer, Operations and IT Director, Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership, (REEEP)
Florian is REEEP’s “Operations & IT Director” and oversees the day-to-day operations as well as the Open Knowledge Programme of REEEP. This includes the management of the “Climate Knowledge Brokers Group” (a group of more than 150 leading knowledge brokers in the international climate sector) and REEEP’s knowledge tools such as reegle.info (a leading linked open data clean energy information portal) and the Climate Tagger (a tool to automatically tag unstructured content and connect it with similar content on other websites). Florian co-authored the book “Linked Open Data: The Essentials” and plays a leading and consulting role in Open Data and Linked Open Data in the international development and climate change community. Prior to joining REEEP, Florian worked as a project manager and consultant for Siemens Austria, where he managed intercultural projects, and he also founded a web design firm in 2003.
Mr. Ibrahim H Rehman, DirectorSocial Transformation, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI)
Mr. Rehman leads the team on the research programmes for sustainable rural development; corporate social responsiblity; relocation and rehabilitation; rural and renewable energy; and rural livelihoods enhancement. He has over two decades of experience in formulation and implementation of CSR policies; projects and activities related to Rural Development as well as Rural Energy and Natural Resources Management. His experience pans across several India states and he has also worked in countries such as Cambodia , Nepal , and Pakistan . Mr. Rehman’s work has been published in several reputed international journals and he has also authored/co-authored three books. Mr. Rehman holds a masters degree in Organic Chemistry ( 1988, Lucknow , University ) and has completed a course in Community Development and Environmental Management from University of Manchester, UK . He is also a British Chevening scholar of the 2000 batch.
Mr. Pradeep Monga, Director of Energy Branch, UNIDO
An energy expert with over 30 years of working experience in the field of energy policy, strategic planning and clean energy technologies, Dr. Pradeep Monga is presently working as Director of Energy Branch at United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Vienna. Prior to joining UNIDO in 2001, Dr. Monga worked with UNDP for over five years overseeing their energy and environment portfolio in India. Before starting his UN career, Dr. Monga has held senior positions in the Government of India, and undertook several international assignments with the World Bank, FAO and other multi/bi-lateral organizations. A Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Monga has been a visiting Fellow at TERI, New Delhi, and World Resources Institute, Washington DC, and completed leadership and change management programme at the Harvard Business School. He is closely involved in strengthening of global partnerships and networks on energy such as UN Energy, Global Bioenergy Partnership, REEEP, REN 21, and has been closely associated with the global initiative on Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) launched by UN Secretary General at Rio + 20 in June 2012.
